Recorded at Green Street Recording, New York, New York in January 1995.
Like 1994's excellent VORTURA, `95's WAMMO is propulsive, intense, and shot through with a fair deal of ecstatic guitar noise. Yet WAMMO is somewhat less fierce than VORTURA, above all in its willingness to focus less on noise and more on the music's pop elements. While old-school fans of the New Zealand trio might take issue with this change, WAMMO ends up being one of the group's strongest releases, with tunes like "At Five We Drive," "Splat," and "D Thing" leaping from the speakers to take listeners by force. The swirling, feedback-laden atmospherics and shoegaze aesthetic are intact, but they're reinforced by a greater attention to structure and melody on WAMMO.
