Burt Bacharach's second solo album for A&M Records, 1969's MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF, spotlights not only his immense ability as a composer, but his superlative arrangement and production skills. Many of these 11 songs feature only multi-tracked female voices singing the occasional snatch of Hal David's lyrics, so as not to distract from the lush layers of strings, woodwinds and brass, led by Bacharach's graceful, jazz-influenced piano solos.
Others, including the definitive version of his classic title track, feature Bacharach's warm, distinctive voice. Five songs, including the melodically complex "Promises Promises," are from the Bacharach/David Broadway musical of the same title. Most of the others, however, are Bacharach's own versions of songs he wrote and produced for others, particularly Dionne Warwick, whose "Do You Know the Way To San Jose?" and "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" are two of the album's highlights.
