Personnel: Karen Mantler (vocals, harmonica, organ); Eric Mingus (vocals); Pablo Calogero (baritone saxophone, flute); Carla Bley (C-melody saxophone); Michael Mantler, Steven Bernstein (trumpet); Steve Swallow (flugelhorn); Steve Weisberg (keyboards); Marc Muller (guitar); Jonathan Sanborn (bass); Ethan Winogrand (drums).
Recorded at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York in 1990.
With GET THE FLU Karen Mantler focuses her attention even more than on previous releases on her cat Arnold. As with its predecessor, this set of 10 songs has jazz elements, but equally embraces Tin Pan Alley, assorted strains of pop music, and cabaret.
Mantler again has a solid band, including the son of jazz bassist Charles Mingus, vocalist Eric Mingus, who adds contrast and theatrical interplay to the character driven songs. Mantler even creates a melancholy Christmas song, less about the holiday itself than its effect on her. The singer's ability to examine her own life, including relationship issues and her bond with her pet, strike a universal chord.
