As a protégé of dub innovator King Tubby, Scientist honed his craft in the mid-'70s, developing a skeletal, bass-heavy remix style of his own. As the tides in Jamaican music shifted away from dub-friendly roots reggae and toward dancehall by the end of the '70s, Scientist kept up with the times, applying his signature sounds to increasingly busier, beefier productions. At the Controls of Dub: Rare Dubs 1979-1980 focuses on Scientist in a phase just before digital technology largely took over the dub landscape, spreading out his adventurous sound effects and bouncing delays over 14 tracks. ~ Fred Thomas
