Coming after the more straightforward R&B of Wait 'Til Night, her disappointing sophomore album following her excellent, creative 2012 debut full-length Playin Me, Cooly G (Merrisa Campbell) goes back to basics with an EP of stripped-down house tracks more in line with the rest of her non-album 12"s. Campbell relegates her sultry voice to sample material here, appearing edited and looped within the maze of pounding beats and dubby echo. These five cuts seem to make no rebuttals about being anything other than straight-up club tracks, but they work incredibly well, with the simmering grime synths of "Flange City" and the funky syncopated beats of "Horrors in the Dance" being particular highlights. ~ Paul Simpson
