For most of his professional life, jazz bassist Ronnie Boykins performed in the Sun Ra Arkestra. In fact, Boykins released only one album, RONNIE BOYKINS on ESP-DISK, as a leader in his lifetime. This was unfortunate: BOYKINS proves he was a bandleader and composer with promise. From 1975, this is a free-bop session, featuring hard bop-style tunes and ensemble work with some free passages and hints of Ellington and traditional New Orleans brass bands. This set swings, albeit in a slightly oblique manner. Boykins has a resolute, Charles Mingus-like tone and the saxophonists, including Monty Waters, contribute rich, inspired solos.
